LAHORE: In a major step to modernize law enforcement, the Punjab government has launched a new drone surveillance system designed to reach crime scenes within minutes. Ultimately, this initiative is a core part of the province’s broader “Smart Policing” strategy.
Specifically, the drones carry high-definition cameras and thermal imaging gear. They stream real-time video directly to the central police control room, thereby providing an immediate aerial view. Consequently, commanders can assess volatile situations—like armed standoffs or large disturbances—without delay. As a result, they can deploy ground forces with much greater precision and information.
A New Elite Investigative Unit
Alongside the technology rollout, the province has simultaneously created a specialized Crime Control Department (CCD). In essence, this elite unit will focus solely on combating major and organized crimes. For instance, its mandate covers serious offenses like homicide, armed robbery, extortion, land grabbing, and attacks by organized shooter groups.
