PTA Advisory: Update Your CNIC or Risk SIM Block in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an urgent advisory asking all mobile phone users across Pakistan to ensure their CNICs are valid and up-to-date. According to the authority, SIM cards registered against expired, cancelled, or deceased individuals’ CNICs may be blocked as part of an ongoing effort to maintain a secure telecom environment in the country.

Why Is PTA Taking This Action?

The PTA’s initiative is part of its continued commitment to protecting consumer interests and promoting a safe, reliable digital ecosystem nationwide. SIM fraud, identity theft, and the misuse of CNICs to register multiple numbers have been persistent challenges in Pakistan’s telecom sector. By ensuring that every active SIM is linked to a verified and currently valid national identity, authorities aim to reduce criminal activity conducted through mobile phones.

Which SIMs Are at Risk of Being Blocked?

According to PTA, the following categories of SIM registrations are at risk of being blocked:

  1. SIMs registered against an expired CNIC.
  2. SIMs linked to cancelled identity cards.
  3. SIMs registered under the name of a deceased individual.

If your CNIC has not been renewed and has passed its expiry date, your mobile number could be deactivated without warning.

How to Check Your SIM Status

Pakistani users can check how many SIMs are registered under their CNIC by sending their CNIC number to 668 via SMS. This free service confirms how many active SIMs are linked to your national identity across all networks. Users can also visit cnic.sims.pk for the same information. The PTA SIM database is continuously updated due to PTA’s biometric re-verification campaign in recent years.

Steps to Avoid a SIM Block

PTA advises mobile users to take the following steps immediately:

  • First, renew your CNIC at the nearest NADRA office or via the Pak-ID app before the expiry date. Download Pak-ID mobile app or form Apple App Store
  • Second, visit your network franchise with your original CNIC for biometric re-verification if any details appear incorrect.
  • Third, if you notice an unknown SIM registered under your CNIC, file a complaint immediately through PTA’s portal at complaint.pta.gov.pk

What Happens If Your SIM Gets Blocked?

If a SIM is blocked due to CNIC issues. Users can visit the nearest franchise of their network operator with a valid, renewed CNIC to restore the service. Most franchises are able to restore connectivity within one to two business days following biometric verification. Users are advised not to delay. As an active SIM registered under an invalid identity can expose them to legal liability if misused by others.

This PTA advisory is a timely reminder to keep your identity documents current. With Pakistan’s telecom sector moving toward stricter identity compliance in preparation for the 5G era. Users who neglect CNIC renewal face real risk of service disruption.
